Alexander Isak Has One Major Flaw, So Should Liverpool Still Pursue Him?

Over the last 24 hours there have been a lot of reports suggesting that Liverpool have yet to give up on chasing the signature of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak. While other teams, such as Arsenal, have decided to move elsewhere, journalists are briefing that the Reds will continue to try their luck.

The Sweden international is one of the most in-demand No. 9s across the footballing world and will command a fee that will eclipse the British transfer record that the Reds have just broken with Florian Wirtz.

After two seasons of scoring 20+ goals in England’s top flight, the qualities of Isak cannot be ignored, but there is one glaring flaw, one that perhaps the Anfield side should take more notice of.

Is Alexander Isak’s Injury Record a Worry for Liverpool?

A growing debate has sparked on social media over the last few months regarding Alexander Isak’s injury record. Many feel that the Swede is injury-prone, but is that actually a fair portrayal of the striker?

Throughout his career, the No. 9 has only had one “major injury”, a thigh issue in 2022/23 that kept him out for over 100 days, missing 18 games for both club and country. Since then, he has missed 21 games over the following two seasons, 2023/24 and 2024/25. Overall, missing 39 games over a three-season period.

In comparison, Liverpool’s Diogo Jota has missed 72 matches in that same timeframe; meanwhile Darwin Nunez, who is rarely injured, doesn’t offer the same quality and finishing prowess as Isak up top.

When it comes to managing players with injury problems, we have already seen that Liverpool have been able to improve in that department. The staff and medical team have showcased evidence over the last year that this is the case.

Ibrahima Konaté, for example, has been plagued with muscle injuries ever since joining back in 2021. But this season, he managed to complete the campaign with no muscle concerns. Although it is worth noting he did pick up one contact injury, which ruled him out for eight games. However, you can not account for impact injuries.

If the Reds find themselves concerned with Isak’s injury record, they may turn to Hugo Ekitike, who boasts an incredible availability rate. The Frankfurt man missed 14 matches for Stade Reims back in 2021/2022, but has had no major setbacks since.

However, if Alexander Isak is available, Liverpool need to take the risk, and they should not hesitate to sign one of the hottest prospects in world football. When Mohamed Salah heads off for AFCON, they will need a man like the Swede to continue piling on the goals for Arne Slot’s men.
