The One Player Liverpool Can’t Afford to Sell — Even If They Don’t Know It Yet
It looks set to be a summer of change for the Premier League champions with multiple outgoings and plenty of incomings. However, amidst the chaos of the transfer window, there is one man that the Reds simply can’t afford to lose.
Liverpool have been extremely active in the transfer market, with Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz already confirmed as signings for the upcoming season. Additionally, Milos Kerkez is expected to join the Reds shortly after receiving the “Here we go” from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
On the selling side, Caoimhín Kelleher has departed for Brentford, and Jarell Quansah seems set to move to Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Andy Robertson is subject to interest from Atletico Madrid. But there is one player who has been subject to plenty of interest that Liverpool should point-blank refuse to sell – Joe Gomez.
Joe Gomez Is More Valuable Than He Seems
Joe Gomez has recently celebrated 10 years of being a Liverpool player, and he is the longest-serving man within Arne Slot’s squad. The Englishman has been at the club so long, he is now eligible for a testimonial, and it is completely deserved.
While the 28 year-old has had his injury issues across 24/25, his unique skillset is something that cannot be taken for granted. The defender is one of only a few players who can fill in at centre-back, left-back, and right-back at a level good enough for the Premier League.
You would be hard-pressed to find another player as versatile and as good in each position as Gomez. It is for this reason that the club should ultimately deem Joe Gomez as unsellable.
Reports have suggested that the Anfield club are open to a sale, with Crystal Palace, Leeds United and West Ham all circling if a move becomes possible.
On paper, while the Reds seem to have enough stock on both flanks – Robertson, Tsimikas and Kerkez at left-back and Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley at right-back – injuries are part of football, and having someone like Gomez around is one of the best insurance policies possible.
Additionally, if a move away from Anfield materialises for Andrew Robertson, losing another player with the experience and longevity at the club, such as Joe Gomez, would be a double blow. Even Arne Slot would agree, as he said this ahead of last season’s final match: Joe Gomez is indeed one of the nicest people you can meet. But he’s also inspiring his teammates when he’s not playing. He has had more impact on our success than the outside world might probably know.”
Joe Gomez’ unmatched versatility and his presence, as confirmed by Arne Slot, amongst the dressing room are characteristics the Reds simply can’t afford to lose, especially with Trent Alexander-Arnold gone and Robertson linked with a move away.
Losing three big leaders in one summer would be a major loss as Liverpool hope to continue on last season’s Premier League success. However, on the other side, if Joe Gomez wants to go and chase more guaranteed game time, it would be hard to ignore one of the club’s greatest servants wishes.
The Reds are still looking to be active in the market, but there may be one reason they shouldn’t move for Alexander Isak, and it isn’t the money involved.
