Setting up your FPL team can sometimes be a headache. Which players do you start, who do you bench, and what combinations will you go for?
Picking your formation is one of the key choices in FPL, as this decides who will score you points. Only the players selected in the starting XI will count towards your total, unless you use your Bench Boost chip.

A Guide to Changing Formation in FPL
To change formation in FPL, all you have to do is make substitutions from your bench with players in your starting XI. For example, if you currently have a 4-4-2, to change to a 4-3-3, you simply have to switch a midfielder with an attacker.
You can choose any formation you want as long as it contains the following minimum criteria:
- 1 Goalkeeper
- 3 Defenders
- 2 Midfielders
- 1 Forward
Formations that do not contain these requirements are not possible. This means you can’t go with only two defenders to try to score big up top.

Every Formation in FPL
In FPL there are countless formations to choose from, seeing as you will have two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, and three attackers. Here are all the possible options:
- Three at the back
- 3-4-3
- 3-5-2
- Four at the back
- 4-4-2
- 4-3-3
- 4-5-1
- Five at the back
- 5-4-1
- 5-3-2
- 5-2-3
Of course, most times in FPL you will want to have more midfielders or attackers, as they usually score more! However, a rule change means defensive players could score you big points from 2025/2026 onwards.
So get onto your squad, and become a tactical genius, and set yourself up to score big! You will want to win all of your mini-leagues to have those bragging rights.
