Manchester United Unlikely To Make Move For Serhou Guirassy In January

Manchester United have been linked with a move for VFB Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy in this transfer window, but the feeling now is that any move for him is unlikely. Guirassy has been in the form of his life in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 17 goals in 14 games. The Guinea international is the second top scorer in the entire competition, only behind the mercurial Harry Kane.

United have been scouting the market for a cheap striker within this summer window and Guirassy’s name has been linked with the Reds for some time. A deal to bring him to the Premier League would be relatively cheap, which is something United have to be mindful of due to their restrictions with FFP in this window.

United Unlikely To Move For Guirassy:

Despite the links, United are not likely to make Guirassy their January striker signing. Stuttgart bosses now believe Guirassy will stay at the club beyond this window and as a result have ended their interest in Wolves striker Sasa Kalajdzic, who now looks set for a move to Eintracht Frankfurt.

In regards to the more likely striker signings for United, it seems as though Timo Werner is a serious candidate for the club. Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim-Chupo Moting is also a player United is monitoring, and the club will come to a decision soon on which player to sign. A loan deal for either is the most likely scenario with United expected to keep their funds for the summer window where they are expected to spend big under INEOS.

Talks have taken place between United and Leipzig regarding a loan move for Timo Werner. The German has fallen out of favor this season, and United could seek to offer him a lifeline in the form of a move back to the Premier League. Werner had an indifferent time during his period at Chelsea and was criticized for his lack of ability in front of goal. This is something United are already struggling with this season.

Is Guirassy The Real Deal?

Guirassy’s form this season has been nothing short of incredible, but his underlying numbers in the years before this season may suggest why United are unlikely to make a move. The Guinea international is outperforming his xG by 4.24 this season, which is a drastic overperformance when compared to the rest of his career. This is the first time in his career that he has overperformed above an xG of 2 and has underperformed in 6 of his 10 seasons as a professional footballer.

Many behind the scenes at Manchester United may feel this is a purple patch for Guirassy, and that it would be unlikely to suggest he could replicate that form in the Premier League if they were to sign him within this window.

Who Will United Move For?

At present, all signs point towards Timo Werner. He makes the most sense in regards to the pressing style Erik ten Hag is trying to employ and can play many roles across the front of the pitch. With Jadon Sancho’s loan nearing completion at Borussia Dortmund, United need more numbers at the top end of the pitch. Werner would also add a dimension of pace to United, which would help them significantly in the transition.

No final decision has been made as of yet, but the expectation is that it will be within the coming days. United are helped by the fact they only play two games in January, and can properly select the correct choice without panic. INEOS will be involved in the decision-making progress for any signing made within this window, despite their deal for 25% of the club yet to be ratified by the Premier League.
